Dear Sir
I am writing with reference to your report of an ‘unidentified flying object’, that you saw above your home, the details of which were passed to this Department. This office is the focal point within the Ministry of Defence for correspondence relating to ‘UFOs’.
First, it may be helpful if I explain that the Ministry of Defence examines any reports of ‘unidentified flying objects’ it receives solely to establish whether what was seen might have some defence significance; namely, whether there is any evidence that the United Kingdom’s airspace might have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised air activity. Unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom from an external source, and to date no ‘UFO’ report has revealed such evidence, we do not attempt to identify the precise nature of each sighting reported to us. We believe that rational explanations, such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena, could be found for them if resources were diverted for this purpose, but it is not the function of the MOD to provide this kind of aerial identification service. It would be an inappropriate use of defence resources if we were to do so.
The MOD does not have any expertise or role in respect of ‘UFO/flying saucer’ matters to the question of the existence or otherwise of extraterrestrial life forms, about which it remains totally open-minded. I should add that to date, the MOD knows of no evidence which substantiates the existence of these alleged phenomena.
With regard to your particular observation, what you saw could have been due to remnants of a fire that was in a Manchester Warehouse, although you haven’t given this office a date or time of your sighting, to see if the dates match up, but then that is only a theory. Also, I can’t confirm whether we received any other ‘UFO’ sightings on the day you saw the ‘UFO’ as you did not forward this office in your e.mail, a specific date or time of the sighting. We are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the United Kingdom’s airspace was breached by unauthorised aircraft.
Sorry I could not be more helpful.
Yours sincerely
Mrs J Monk

The latest and most valuable information is a reply from Liverpool John Lennon airport, clearing up the sightings completely:
Dear Mr Sadler
I am writing in response to your enquiry regarding aircraft noise events over Liverpool on 5th June 2006, my apologies for the delay responding to you.
The aircraft in question was a RAF Tornado flight number “ JAV20” engaged in a familiarisation training exercise over Merseyside. The aircraft arrived from the north east and it was at 8300ft over Bolton it then descended to 3100ft over Seaforth container depot, it then crossed the Mersey and turned over New Brightonwere it was at 2600ft and crossed back over the Mersey from Seacombe (2600ft) it then continued over Liverpool city centre (2000ft) and on towards Warrington ( 2000ft) were it turned and made its final approach before landing on runway 27 at Liverpool John Lennon airport at 21:56.
The Aircraft departed from runway 27 at 21:57 and turned to the North West of Cressington station were its altitude was 1400ft, it then continued north to north west off Allerton station and turned to the north, east of Calder stones (2700ft). It continued over Huyton (3900ft) and on towards Bolton (9300ft) it then remained at this altitude in a north eastern path until it turned due north over Bradford and on to RAF Leeming.
It is not common for aircaft of this type to visit Liverpool John Lennon airport, especially at this time. We do not envisage this event occurring frequently in the future.
Please find enclosed maps showing the actual tracks of the aircraft. The red track is the aircraft arriving with the blue being its departure route.
Please note that your enquiry has been recorded and will be reported to the Airport Company’s next noise monitoring sub committee for consideration.
Yours sincerely
