YE OLDE WHITE LION, 22 HIGH STREET, CONGLETON, CHESHIRE.
This peaceful olde worlde market town pub dates back over 500yrs and is currently enjoying a return to grace as the towns most lively and welcoming pub.
This building has had many uses including that of the office of John Bradshaw, who signed the death warrant of Charles the first in 1649.
A plaque to the side of the front doorway tells of Bradsaws usage of the premises as an attorney of law.
Inside the White Lion, the surroundings are as you would expect, warm, hospitable, with oak beams, old pictures and brasses adorning the walls.
A tunnel is said to be found below the cellar, stretcing from another local pub to the old town hall, unconfirmed as yet, and with no plans yet to be found, or blocked entrance ways within the Cellar.
And with many buildings of its age and ilk, it comes with its share of ghostly tales.
The first of which comes from two regulars and upholding citizens within the community. One night after closing, they remained to do some small painting jobs to the internal areas of the pub. Some time went by, and one of the men, seemed to notice some shadows in the kitchen area, upon checking both the building and the grounds, no human traces could be found, and they carried on, several building related noises followed, and again they looked around, upon entering thr kitchen again, both of them watched as a very large and heavy cooker grate, lifted from the wall and flew to the other side of the kitchen, as did several smaller pans. The men remained unabashed and tidied up, but checks were unable to determine what led to the event.
More witnesses have recently come forward giving theie accounts of what they believe to be paranoramal events.
We have been told a lady has been seen in victorian clothing, that of a poor woman or maid, near to now is found the open real fire, others have only noticed a mist forming in the same area, could this be the same sighting but percieved in a different manner.
Occasionally items have been seen to lift, fall or throw themselves from the bars shelves, could this be caused by vibration?
Our latest report occured on New years eve, 31/12/2005. A barperson at the pub , with only four people in the pub at around 1430hrs, watched an old man, small in a peaked cap. looked into the pub from the rear window, he made to enter through the rear entrance, but did not appear, thinking the old man may have fallen, the witness made to check at speed, upon opening the door, no body was there. The witness knowing the venue and its grounds, checked all the outbuildins and toilets, but noone could be found. The rear area is quite vast and with the benefit of CCTV. To exit the grounds would have taken longer than the witness searched the area, and nobody appeared onn CCTV footage exiting the area.
